As Victoria Day approaches, Ottawa residents are eagerly preparing for the long weekend tradition of fireworks displays lighting up the capital’s skyline. This year’s celebrations come with specific guidelines that both homeowners and spectators need to know before enjoying the festivities.

In Ottawa, personal fireworks are permitted only on Victoria Day itself and the day before, according to city bylaws. This means residents can legally set off fireworks on Sunday, May 19 and Monday, May 20, but must conclude by 11 p.m. each night. It’s worth noting that while these two days provide a window for backyard displays, the city maintains strict regulations around where and how fireworks can be used.

Safety is our primary concern during holiday celebrations,” explains Ottawa Fire Services Captain Jean Marcoux. “We encourage residents to enjoy fireworks responsibly and be mindful of their neighbors, particularly those with pets or young children who may be sensitive to loud noises.”

For those planning home displays, remember that fireworks can only be discharged on private property, with the property owner’s consent. Public parks, streets, and shared spaces are off-limits unless specifically designated for community events. The city has implemented a $500 fine for violations, which bylaw officers will be monitoring throughout the weekend.

Weather conditions could impact this year’s celebrations, with Environment Canada forecasting mixed conditions for the holiday weekend. Current predictions suggest Monday evening might bring light showers, potentially affecting visibility and safety for fireworks enthusiasts.

Always check the weather forecast before planning your display,” advises Marcoux. “Wet conditions can compromise firework performance, and strong winds can create unpredictable and potentially dangerous situations.”

For families preferring to enjoy professional displays, several organized events are happening throughout the region. The standout celebration will be at Mooney’s Bay Park, where the annual Victoria Day fireworks show begins at 10 p.m. on Monday. Admission is free, though attendees are encouraged to arrive early as parking is limited.

In Gatineau, Casino Lac-Leamy will host its traditional display visible from both sides of the Ottawa River. The show starts at 9:15 p.m., offering spectacular views for those gathered along the waterfront.

Several communities in the Ottawa Valley are hosting their own celebrations. Smiths Falls will feature a community display at Lower Reach Park on Monday evening starting at 9:30 p.m., while Kemptville’s Riverside Park welcomes visitors for a family-friendly event beginning at 7 p.m., with fireworks scheduled for dusk.

For pet owners, the holiday weekend often brings anxiety as many animals are frightened by the loud noises associated with fireworks. Local veterinarian Dr. Sarah Patel from Capital Veterinary Hospital suggests preparation is key.

Create a safe space for your pets indoors, preferably in a room without windows. Background noise from television or music can help mask the sound of fireworks,” says Dr. Patel. “For pets with severe anxiety, consult your veterinarian ahead of time about possible medication options.”

Environmental concerns have also become increasingly prominent in discussions about fireworks celebrations. Traditional fireworks release particulate matter and various chemicals into the atmosphere, raising questions about air quality and environmental impact.

“We’re seeing more communities across Canada exploring alternative celebration options,” notes Dr. Michael Reid, environmental science professor at Carleton University. “Low-noise fireworks or drone light shows are becoming popular alternatives that maintain the visual spectacle while reducing noise and environmental impacts.”

For those who prefer to avoid crowds but still want to enjoy the holiday, many local restaurants are offering Victoria Day specials. The ByWard Market will remain open throughout the weekend, with extended hours on Monday to accommodate holiday shoppers and diners
