As a local journalist, I’ve been tracking the disturbing hit-and-run incident that occurred in Scarborough. The latest development reveals security footage showing the moments before a fatal collision claimed a pedestrian’s life.

The video, which has been circulating among investigators, captures a woman walking in the middle of a Scarborough road shortly before being struck. Toronto Police confirmed the footage is part of their ongoing investigation into this tragic incident.

The collision happened near Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue East, an intersection that has seen several pedestrian incidents in recent years. Local resident Aman Singh, who lives nearby, told me he heard the impact around 10:30 p.m.

“I was just about to go to bed when I heard this terrible sound,” Singh said. “When I looked outside, I could see people gathering, but the car was already gone.”

Police report the driver fled the scene immediately after striking the woman. Investigators are now analyzing the video footage to identify the vehicle. Detective Sarah Martinez from Toronto’s Traffic Services described the investigation as “active and urgent.”

“We’re asking anyone who was in the area that night to come forward with information,” Martinez explained. “Even the smallest detail could be crucial to finding the person responsible.”

The victim, whose identity has not been released pending notification of family members, was pronounced dead at the scene. This marks the third pedestrian fatality in Scarborough this year.

Community safety advocate Teresa Wong from Safe Streets Toronto expressed her frustration with the ongoing danger pedestrians face. “These streets weren’t designed with safety in mind,” Wong said. “We need better lighting, lower speed limits, and more crosswalks.”

City data shows that this particular stretch of road has been flagged as a high-risk area in Toronto’s Vision Zero road safety plan, which aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities.

Councillor Michael Thompson, who represents the Scarborough Centre ward, has called for an emergency meeting to discuss additional safety measures. “We cannot continue to lose lives this way,” Thompson stated in a press release. “Every tragedy like this is preventable.”

Local business owner Priya Patel, whose shop faces the intersection, shared that she’s witnessed many near-misses. “People drive way too fast through here,” Patel observed. “And at night, visibility is poor. I’ve been saying for years something terrible would happen.”

The video footage, while disturbing, may provide essential clues for investigators. Police are specifically looking for a dark-colored sedan with likely front-end damage. They’re reviewing additional security cameras from nearby businesses and traffic cameras.

For me, covering these stories is always difficult. Having walked these Scarborough streets countless times while reporting on local businesses, I understand how treacherous they can become, especially after dark. The combination of poor lighting, high speeds, and limited crosswalks creates a dangerous environment for pedestrians.

If you witnessed anything related to this incident or have information about the vehicle involved, please contact Toronto Police Traffic Services at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

As our community mourns another preventable loss, the conversation about pedestrian safety in Scarborough must lead to meaningful action. The victim’s family deserves justice, and all Torontonians deserve safer streets.
