Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is currently on a significant trade mission to Japan and South Korea, focusing on strengthening economic ties and exploring new transportation options for the province.
During her visit to Japan, Premier Smith met with representatives from Central Japan Railway Company to discuss the possibility of bringing high-speed rail technology to Alberta. The company is known for its Shinkansen bullet trains, which could potentially connect Calgary and Edmonton, drastically reducing travel time between Alberta’s two largest cities.
“We’re serious about exploring high-speed rail between Calgary and Edmonton,” Smith stated. “Learning from Japan’s expertise in this field could help us develop a transportation system that serves Albertans efficiently while creating jobs and investment opportunities.”
The trade mission also includes meetings with energy sector leaders in both countries. Smith is promoting Alberta’s natural resources, including natural gas and hydrogen, as reliable energy sources for Asian markets. These discussions build on existing partnerships, as Japan and South Korea are already significant investors in Alberta’s energy sector.
Beyond transportation and energy, the Premier is working to expand trade relationships across multiple industries. Alberta currently exports approximately $2.3 billion in goods to Japan and $1.1 billion to South Korea annually, with opportunities to increase these figures.
Agriculture remains a key export, with Alberta beef particularly valued in Asian markets. Smith is meeting with agricultural importers to secure better market access for Alberta farmers and ranchers.
The mission also highlights Alberta’s growing technology sector. The Premier is showcasing the province’s innovations in artificial intelligence, clean technology, and digital services to attract investment and create partnerships with Asian technology companies.
Several Alberta business leaders have joined the Premier on this trip, representing industries from agriculture to technology. These business representatives are participating in networking events and direct meetings with potential partners and investors.
The Alberta government believes this trade mission will strengthen existing relationships while opening new doors for Alberta businesses in two of Asia’s largest economies. The mission continues through next week, with additional meetings scheduled with government officials and business leaders in both countries.
